Ugh when will the rain stop? The rain was pelting my window so hard last night that I couldn't sleep. So I took a nice nap today. People in central Florida just do not take their tropical storms as seriously as people in south Florida! The people around me left all their furniture on their patios to get blown around. I'm glad the wind wasn't any more than 40mph here.

10:40a Getting the Landlord's Attention
Hi! So the apartment I'm in is old and warped. You can eyeball the walls and note they don't meet at a perfect 90degrees in most places.
Through age and probable neglect there have been a couple of issues that have developed that have been reported to the landlord only (so far) to no avail.
Two interior doors don't hang right, one won't close due to the cant in the apartment and one won't latch. They should be rehung or possibly replaced. The bathtub sink runs constantly, and I don't mean it has a steady drip - it runs. It's easily wasting dozens of gallons of water every day (horrifying to me, a native of typically drought-struck Southern California). We're not carpenters up in here, or plumbers, so this outstrips our know-how.
After almost two weeks of notice the landlord hasn't done anything more than saying he will send someone...eventually.
How long is a reasonable wait for this? And what are our recourses? We've heard calling 311 invites the landlord to refuse to renew the lease and give a recommendation. Can we hire someone ourselves and take it out of the rent?
We understand these aren't life threatening but they are pretty annoying (especially with two cats around). How long is long enough?
ETA: Oh, yes, and I have read over the Tenant's Rights Guide. Thanks!

1:28p my poor neighbor has bedbugs!
Does anyone know of a renters' insurance plan in NYC that covers belongings destroyed by bedbug infestation? (Based on Googling, I think the answer is no, but I'm not sure how old the information I dug up was.)
I just found out an apartment in my building (not mine) has been infested for years. They haven't gotten into my apartment for this whole time, knock on wood, and my logical mind knows I'm not in any more danger from them than I was before I had this information. But in case they happen to be psychic bedbugs who will come and get me now that I know about them, I'd like to be prepared.
Also, if my neighbors and I were to call 311 about this, would the Department of Buildings have any power to force my landlord to exterminate the entire building?
Thanks, and bleagh.

7:30a Just out of curiosity. . .
How many of you have professors that don't allow the use of laptops to take notes? Last semester, none of my professors allowed laptops for notes. This semester, none of them have a problem with it.
I know that different schools have different practices, but I was just interested in what it was like for others, and what kind of explainations your profs have given.

1:29a Obama Emails
I'm sure that everyone has received, seen, or heard of those Obama emails. THe ones that say things like he is a Muslim. I wish that these people, with way too much free time on their hands, would stop sending out emails with falsehoods. I wish that people would check the facts before they forward these emails to 50 other people too. WHo needs 527's with all these emails going around? Its a free way to give your opponent bad press coverage. I think that there are enough bad things about Obama that are actually true, and enough things about McCain that are good, that it is not necessary to try to beat him with lies or unconfirmed rumors. When people make up all these lies about someone like Obama, and people know that they are lies, its hard for them to believe bad things about that person when they are actually true. Its like the boy who cried 'wolf'.
Its something how anyone could make up any far-fetched rumor and if its repeated enough, people will believe it as fact. THere are people that believe if you forward an email enough times that Bill Gates will give you money.
In recent polls, 12% of the population believe that Barack Hussein Obama is a Muslim. I wonder if most of that 12% are mostly people in the Religious RIght who probably would never vote for Obama anyway? If its moderates and apolitical people who believe that Obama is a Muslim, then he has problems.
A lot of people in the Obama camp are surprised that he isn't running away with the election. John McCain is in the worst position to run for President, of any Republican, since 1976. If he can win, it will really be something.
I heard that McCain is now ahead of Obama in one poll 46%-41% and that according to one website that if the election were held today, John McCain would win the electoral college 274-264. The map would be almost identical to the 2000 election map, except Obama would take New Hampshire.

1:29a Obama's VP?
Barack Obama is holding a major campaign event on Saturday with his Vice Presidential Choice in Indiana. Guess who is from Indiana?...
http://www.nashvillepost.com/news/2008/8/20/obama_team_to_hold_major_event_saturday_in_bayhs_indiana
Assuming that it is Sen. Evan Bayh, that is a pretty good choice for Obama, I would say. He is seen as a moderate Democrat from a state that has voted Republican since 1964 but may be a swing state this time. He has been a governor of a state and has foreign policy knowledge. If anything, the Democrat ticket should be the other way around with Bayh at the top of the ticket and Obama as the VP choice.

2:26a Staying outside NYC
I'm just wondering people's opinions on the best option for staying outside NYC? I think I'm going to have to come to the city for a quick visit, but I'm going to be driving and on a tight budget and I don't really want to drive inside Manhattan, plus I want to spend as little as possible but still stay in a clean, safe place. Recommendations? I'm ok with it being a fair distance from the city as long as there are transportation options for getting in and out. I've stayed in Weehawken before and I didn't mind it but it was still a bit pricey (or at least where I stayed was) and I know some people stay in Newark, but I can't help but wonder if there are some good options that aren't in Jersey.
Thanks!

12:40a Reasonably Priced Doggie Day Care?
My roommate has an adorable puppy, but unfortunately she is hardly ever here and we end up taking care of him more than we should. He doesn't get walked NEARLY enough, isn't too potty-trained, has NO manners and has no doggie friends. I'm upset at her thinking this whole situation is okay, so I'm going to go ahead and do some research FOR her and hopefully she'll participate. I think he would benefit greatly from doggie day care of some sort.
He's the cutest little Yorkie and we'd all hate to see him go, but something's got to give. I know she won't do any research because my roommate thinks she can't afford it, but I bet there's an option for her. Any help would be greatly appreciated, the little guy needs a lot of help!
Thank you!

12:06a ezpass
I am renting a car to go camping this weekend. Do you guys know if Budget have ezpass in them or if I could just add the license plate to my account easily. I don't want to spend all day trying to get this car on my account but at the same time I don't want to sit in the cash lane.
I didnt see anything about this on the ezpass website. Even though it would just be so easy to take it out of my car I don't want to have it taken away from me. Thanks!
